Stellantis invests over one billion euros to revive Peugeot

Stellantis has committed more than one billion euros to its operations in France, targeting research and development as well as the future production of three electrified Peugeot models. The vehicles are scheduled to be manufactured at the Mulhouse plant starting in 2029, marking a long-term industrial repositioning for one of the group’s core brands.

The investment comes at a time of intense pressure on the European automotive industry, where manufacturers face rising costs, accelerated electrification demands, and shifting production strategies across global markets. The Mulhouse site, which employs around 4,000 workers, is positioned as a strategic pillar within Stellantis’ French footprint and will receive a significant share of the new funding.

According to the structure of the plan, half of the total envelope will go to research and development, 40 percent will be directed to the Mulhouse industrial site, and 10 percent will support other locations. A central focus of the strategy is the development of the STLA One architecture, designed to unify and simplify vehicle platforms across the group’s global operations.

STLA One is expected to underpin more than 30 new models by 2030 across multiple segments and powertrains. Stellantis aims to consolidate production so that half of its global output relies on just three modular platforms, with up to 70 percent shared components. The objective is to reduce complexity, cut costs, and accelerate industrial efficiency while maintaining brand differentiation in an increasingly competitive market.

The announcement follows a difficult financial year in which Stellantis recorded losses in 2025 and lost market share in Europe. The group’s strategic restructuring plan includes capacity reductions across the continent, a move that has raised concerns among workers and policymakers. The new investment in France is widely seen as an attempt to balance industrial downsizing with targeted reinvestment in key sites.

Beyond Europe, the decision carries indirect relevance for markets such as Morocco, where Peugeot maintains a strong presence through established distribution networks and broad consumer visibility. The evolution of production in Mulhouse could influence future export offerings, while also intersecting with Morocco’s growing automotive ecosystem centered in industrial hubs such as Tangier, Kenitra, and Casablanca.

The long-term success of the strategy will depend on execution rather than announcement. Stellantis must navigate rising global competition, fluctuating demand for electric vehicles, and the challenge of maintaining profitability while simplifying its industrial base without weakening brand identity.
