Morocco Unveils New 50 Dirham Banknote Celebrating Sustainability

In a significant move to commemorate the 25th anniversary of King Mohammed VI's reign, Bank Al-Maghrib has introduced a new 50 dirham banknote that underscores Morocco's dedication to sustainable development. This fresh currency, infused with striking illustrations, reflects the nation's commitment to clean energy and natural resource conservation.

The newly minted banknote, which became available on Tuesday, vividly portrays Morocco’s progress in sustainable development. It aligns with the national strategy aimed at promoting clean energy and safeguarding natural resources.

Front Design: A Tribute to Heritage and Nature

The front side of the banknote features a dignified portrait of King Mohammed VI, alongside the Kingdom’s Coat of Arms. It also includes an architectural motif inspired by traditional Moroccan doors and a stylized depiction of the breathtaking Ouzoud Waterfalls, symbolizing the country's rich natural heritage.

Back Design: Showcasing Renewable Energy Initiatives

Turning the banknote over reveals Morocco’s advances in renewable energy. It showcases stylized views of the “NOOR” Solar Station in Ouarzazate, an array of wind turbines, the Ouirgane dam, and the Agadir seawater desalination plant. These images collectively highlight the nation’s investments in sustainable infrastructure.

Advanced Security Features

To ensure the banknote’s integrity, it is equipped with state-of-the-art security features. These include a dynamic color-shifting security thread, an iridescent band on the reverse side, a front-to-back registration device, raised patterns for the visually impaired, and progressive numbering. These enhancements protect against counterfeiting while ensuring accessibility.

Exclusively Moroccan Expertise

The entire process of designing and producing this banknote was exclusively managed by Moroccan experts at Dar As-Sikkah, showcasing the country's skilled workforce and technological capabilities.

Commemorative Coin Release

In addition to the 50 dirham banknote, Bank Al-Maghrib has also issued a commemorative silver coin with a face value of 250 dirhams to mark the 25th anniversary of King Mohammed VI’s enthronement. This coin features artistic representations of the Allegiance Ceremony and the Royal Coat of Arms, with inscriptions in Arabic, French, and Tifinagh.

Previous Banknote Releases

This release follows the issuance of new 100 and 200 dirham banknotes. The 100 dirham note, released on November 24, 2023, celebrates the cultural heritage and socio-economic development of the Moroccan Sahara, and its openness to Africa. Earlier this year, on January 12, the 200 dirham note was introduced, emphasizing the economic and industrial strides made under King Mohammed VI’s guidance, particularly in infrastructure and industry.

This new 50 dirham banknote not only marks a milestone in Morocco's currency history but also serves as a testament to the country's forward-thinking approach towards sustainable development and environmental stewardship.
