Ukraine showcases long-range reach in escalating drone strikes amid fragile peace talks
Ukraine carried out one of its most extensive aerial assaults in months, launching hundreds of drones at key targets deep inside Russian territory, including Moscow’s major airports. The overnight attack forced the temporary closure of four airports in the capital and disrupted air traffic across the region, marking a significant show of Kyiv’s deep-strike capabilities at a time of delicate international negotiations over a potential peace deal.
Expanding reach and impact
Russian defense officials reported intercepting nearly 300 drones across multiple regions, including dozens directed toward Moscow. The wave of attacks halted operations at Vnukovo, Domodedovo, Sheremetyevo, and Zhukovsky airports for several hours and delayed more than 200 flights.
Beyond the capital, explosions were reported in Veliky Novgorod, where fires broke out at a major chemical and fertilizer complex following a drone strike. Regional authorities confirmed that debris from intercepted drones caused multiple blazes but said emergency teams quickly contained the damage.
Political leverage and timing
The strikes came as Ukraine presented a revised 20-point peace framework to the United States, reducing its earlier list of demands in what officials described as an effort to maintain Western unity amid renewed talks. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the U.S. proposal includes the creation of a “free economic zone” in the eastern Donbas area, though he warned that any withdrawal of Ukrainian forces from such territories must first be approved by a national referendum.
Meanwhile, political leaders across Europe, including those of Germany, France, and the United Kingdom, have been pressing Washington to keep diplomatic channels open despite growing tension over potential territorial concessions. Observers noted that Ukraine’s intensified drone campaign may be aimed at strengthening its negotiating position while demonstrating that its operational reach remains intact despite limited resources.
Strategic implications
Analysts say the strikes highlight Ukraine’s persistent adaptation under wartime pressure, particularly through its homegrown drone fleet. The long-range FP-1 drones, which now account for a majority of successful deep-strike missions inside Russia, have allowed Kyiv to challenge Moscow’s control over logistics and military production.
Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, Russian forces have occupied roughly 20 percent of Ukrainian territory. This renewed offensive underlines Ukraine’s determination to keep pressure on critical Russian infrastructure while debates continue abroad over the conditions of an eventual ceasefire.
