UK to analyze black box after Libyan military plane crash
The United Kingdom has agreed to analyze the black box of a Libyan military plane that crashed in Turkey on December 23, killing eight people, including the Libyan chief of staff, the Tripoli government announced on Thursday.
The aircraft, a Falcon 50, was carrying a Libyan delegation, including General Mohamed al-Haddad, who was widely respected in Libya despite ongoing divisions between the eastern and western regions. Four of his aides and three crew members also died in the accident, which occurred shortly after takeoff from Ankara.
Turkish authorities indicated that an electrical failure may have caused the crash. Libya initially requested assistance from Germany, which sought France’s help, but international aviation rules require the analyzing country to be neutral. As the plane was partly French-built and included French crew members, France could not participate. The UK, however, was accepted by both Libya and Turkey to perform the analysis.
Libyan officials emphasized that the investigation will continue under Libyan-Turkish cooperation with international technical participation. The authorities stated that the time required to analyze the black box depends on its condition and that results will be published once available.
