U.S. lawmakers warn of potential ground troop deployment in Iran
Democratic U.S. senators have voiced serious concerns over the possibility that President Donald Trump may deploy American ground forces in Iran, citing heightened risks due to Russian support for Tehran’s military operations.
Senator Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire highlighted that Russia is already sharing intelligence with Iran, forming a broader axis that includes China and North Korea, which could threaten U.S. national security. After a classified briefing from administration officials, Shaheen urged the administration to provide public testimony before Congress to clarify military plans.
Two sources familiar with U.S. intelligence reports confirmed that Russia is supplying Iran with targeting data for U.S. bases and naval vessels. Senators expressed frustration over a series of closed-door briefings, which left many questions unanswered regarding the potential costs, duration, and scope of military involvement.
Senator Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut warned that current developments indicate the U.S. may be moving toward deploying troops on the ground in Iran to achieve certain strategic objectives. Analysts note that any such action could significantly escalate tensions in the region and draw international attention.
