Turkey mediates between Iran and U.S. to encourage peace talks
Turkey is acting as an intermediary between Iran and the United States, facilitating messages to promote de-escalation and direct negotiations, Harun Armagan, vice chair of foreign affairs for President Tayyip Erdogan's ruling party, told Reuters on Wednesday.
While details of the communications were not disclosed, Armagan said that Turkey was also conveying messages to Gulf nations affected by the ongoing regional tensions triggered by U.S.-Israeli actions in Iran.
Turkey, a NATO member, has been attempting to mediate U.S.-Iran dialogue since before the conflict escalated nearly a month ago, repeatedly calling for an immediate ceasefire. President Erdogan affirmed that Ankara would continue using all available channels to work toward peace.
Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan confirmed that Turkey was offering “friendly guidance” to Tehran to prevent further escalation and was maintaining contact with Washington to assess both sides’ positions. A diplomatic source said Fidan had recently held discussions with U.S. officials and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi on potential steps to end hostilities.
