Trump declares Iran interim agreement over as tensions escalate again
U.S. President Donald Trump said Wednesday that an interim understanding with Iran aimed at ending the conflict had come to an end, marking a new setback for diplomatic efforts between Washington and Tehran.
Speaking on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Ankara, Trump said the memorandum of understanding previously reached between the two sides was no longer in effect and indicated that he did not intend to pursue further engagement with Iranian authorities.
Ceasefire window fails to produce breakthrough
The temporary arrangement, negotiated with the involvement of Pakistan as a mediator, had created a 60-day period designed to allow indirect discussions on a longer-term settlement.
However, talks held in Qatar concluded without significant progress, according to officials familiar with the discussions. The diplomatic channel subsequently weakened as military tensions intensified.
The United States launched a new series of strikes against Iranian targets on Tuesday, further complicating prospects for a return to negotiations.
Rising uncertainty over next steps
The collapse of the interim framework raises questions about the future direction of the confrontation and the possibility of renewed diplomatic initiatives.
International observers are closely monitoring developments as regional actors assess the impact of the latest escalation on security conditions across the Middle East.
Trump's remarks came during a major gathering of NATO leaders, where discussions have focused heavily on defence cooperation, global security challenges and the alliance's response to growing geopolitical tensions.
