Trump announces plan to impose 200% tariffs on French wines and champagne
U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday his intention to impose tariffs of up to 200% on French wines and champagnes, escalating trade tensions with Europe amid growing geopolitical disputes.
Speaking to American journalists, Trump said the measure would target French wine exports specifically, linking the threat to France’s opposition to his proposed international “Board of Peace” initiative and broader disagreements with European countries. According to Trump, the tariffs could serve as leverage to pressure European leaders to align with U.S. strategic objectives.
The announcement comes after French President Emmanuel Macron, through members of his entourage, indicated that France does not currently plan to join the U.S.-led Board of Peace, an initiative viewed by some European officials as competing with existing United Nations mechanisms.
Trump has also warned that other European countries opposing his policies, including his controversial stance on Greenland, could face similar trade penalties. He suggested that European resistance would be limited in the face of strong economic measures.
The proposed tariffs, if implemented, could significantly impact French wine producers and exporters, for whom the United States remains a key market, while further intensifying an already fragile transatlantic trade relationship.
