Tragic school bus accident in Eure-et-Loir leaves one dead and several injured

In the early hours of Thursday, a school bus carrying 35 minors and the driver crashed on a departmental road near Châteaudun, Eure-et-Loir. The cause of the accident remains unclear, but the bus veered off the road and landed on its side. Tragically, a 15-year-old high school student died, and 24 others, including several students, were injured. The local emergency services, including a medical unit and the SAMU, rushed to the scene, offering immediate care. A psychological support team was also activated to assist the victims and their families.

The accident was reported at 7:38 AM, prompting a swift response from local firefighters. A total of 16 fire trucks and around 40 firefighters were dispatched to the location. The deceased student, identified as Johanna, was a second-year student at Émile Zola High School in Châteaudun. Authorities confirmed that her body would undergo an examination at the Garches Institute of Forensic Medicine. Two other children were also transported to the hospital with less severe injuries.

An investigation into "involuntary homicide and injuries" has been initiated by the public prosecutor’s office, and the Departmental Road Safety Squadron is handling the case. Additionally, the Bureau of Investigation on Transport Accidents (BEA-TT) has been called in to conduct a parallel inquiry into the cause of the crash, including the condition of the vehicle and the driver's conduct.

Reports indicate that the road was known to be hazardous, with warnings about its danger, and local officials expressed shock over the tragic event. The 26-year-old driver was placed under arrest after testing positive for drugs, although he was negative for alcohol. The investigation continues to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the accident.

The Education Minister expressed deep sadness over the loss of life and extended condolences to the victim’s family and school community. She also confirmed plans to visit the school next week to offer further support.
