Three priests under canonical investigation over abuse allegations involving minors
Three priests belonging to the traditionalist Catholic community of Riaumont, located in northern France, are set to face a canonical investigation following allegations of violence against minors. The announcement was made on Friday by the Bishop of Arras, Olivier Leborgne.
According to the bishop, the canonical inquiry will concern the same three priests who have already been placed under formal judicial investigation by French authorities. The decision follows a canonical visit carried out in September, which led to a detailed report presented to Church authorities.
In response to the findings, the leadership of the Catholic Church has given the Riaumont community one year to reassess its foundations, redefine its mission, and revise its internal statutes. Church officials stated that the educational role previously exercised by the community is no longer considered viable, citing a lack of appropriate competencies and the broader judicial context.
These measures come after the former prior of the community was convicted and sentenced to a suspended prison term for offenses related to illegal material involving minors. Additional legal proceedings are ongoing, with prosecutors seeking a trial against several members of the community over alleged acts of violence against dozens of children over a period spanning more than a decade.
The case has intensified scrutiny of the Riaumont community and reflects the wider efforts of the Catholic Church in France to address allegations of abuse through both judicial and canonical channels.
