THAMM Plus: Italy's Strategic Recruitment of Moroccan Mechatronics Experts

In a significant move to address labor shortages, Italy is actively seeking Moroccan professionals trained in mechatronics through the THAMM Plus Project. This initiative, funded by the European Union and spearheaded by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), aims to facilitate the professional mobility of 500 workers between Morocco and the Italian regions of Lombardy, Veneto, and Emilia-Romagna.

The Emilia-Romagna Regional Agency for Labor has issued a public notice inviting local employers to express interest in recruiting these specialized professionals. This effort not only aims to bridge the gap in the labor market but also to enhance the protection mechanisms for migrant workers throughout their migration journey.

Addressing Labor Shortages

The THAMM Plus Project is part of a broader regional action titled “Towards a Holistic Approach to Labour Migration Governance and Labour Mobility in North Africa” (THAMM). This initiative aligns with global and regional policy frameworks, including the UN Sustainable Development Goals 8 and 10, the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly, and Regular Migration, and the European Union’s New Pact on Migration and Asylum.

Employer Participation and Benefits

To participate, interested employers must have been established and active for at least one year. They must also refer to the professional profiles specified in the notice, which align with the needs expressed by employer organizations within the mechatronics sector. Importantly, the submission of expressions of interest is non-binding, allowing employers the flexibility to opt out of the selection or hiring process if they so choose.

Application Process

Applications will be processed in the order they are received, with the submission deadline set for December 31, 2024. Selected candidates will undergo professional training in Morocco, tailored to the specific requirements of the positions they are being considered for, before being presented to Italian employers.

Strengthening Economic Ties

Participating companies in Lombardy, Veneto, and Emilia-Romagna stand to gain significantly from this project. They can meet their labor needs with qualified professionals trained according to their specifications, engage in free training and exchange activities facilitated by IOM, and explore the burgeoning labor and economic market of North Africa.

The THAMM Plus Project represents a pivotal step in addressing labor shortages in Italy while providing Moroccan professionals with valuable opportunities to expand their careers. By fostering a structured and supportive migration process, this initiative not only meets immediate labor market needs but also contributes to the broader goals of safe and orderly migration.

This strategic recruitment drive underscores Italy's commitment to building stronger economic and professional ties with North Africa, ultimately benefiting both regions through enhanced collaboration and mutual growth.
