Sweden celebrates the royal couple’s golden wedding anniversary
Sweden marked a historic milestone on Saturday as King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia celebrated their golden wedding anniversary, drawing widespread public attention and national celebrations in Stockholm.
The royal couple, aged 80 and 82 respectively, marked 50 years of marriage with a ceremonial procession through the Swedish capital, where they were greeted by cheering crowds. The celebrations included a horse-drawn carriage parade through central Stockholm, reflecting the couple’s enduring popularity in the country.
The King and Queen were married on June 19, 1976, after meeting years earlier during the 1972 Munich Olympic Games. At the time, Silvia Sommerlath, of German-Brazilian heritage, worked as an interpreter, while the then-crown prince later became known for his interest in cars and sports.
Festivities began with a solemn Te Deum service held at the Royal Chapel inside the palace, followed by a private lunch with family members. The Queen appeared in a coral-red suit complemented by a matching hat, as the couple later traveled through the city streets to the applause of thousands of Swedes gathered along the route.
Later in the day, the royal couple attended a concert in Kungsträdgården park, themed around love and celebration, while additional cultural events were scheduled at the Royal Opera House. A private dinner at the palace was also planned for close friends and family.
King Carl XVI Gustaf, who ascended the throne more than five decades ago, is currently the longest-reigning monarch in Europe. Despite modernization and political change in Sweden, he remains a widely respected public figure. A recent survey indicated that nearly 70% of Swedes believe he represents the country well.
The royal couple has three children, including Crown Princess Victoria, Prince Carl Philip, and Princess Madeleine, who continue to play active roles in royal duties and public life.
The golden wedding anniversary adds to a series of recent royal milestones celebrated in Sweden, reinforcing the monarchy’s symbolic role in national identity and public life.
