Sudan: Paramilitary drone strikes kill dozens in the South

Sudan, already scarred by years of conflict, has witnessed a deadly paramilitary attack in the southern region. On Sunday, local officials reported that drone strikes hit the city of Kalogi in South Kordofan, a town under army control, killing dozens of civilians, including children.

According to Essam al-Din al-Sayed, head of Kalogi’s administrative unit, the assault involved three separate strikes targeting first a kindergarten, then a hospital, and finally individuals attempting to rescue children. The attack was attributed to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and their allies from the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North, led by Abdelaziz al-Hilu.

The Sudanese conflict has escalated since April 2023, with fighting between the RSF and the national army causing widespread displacement and humanitarian distress. The recent drone strikes mark a new escalation in violence, further endangering civilian populations in contested areas.

International observers have expressed concern over the targeting of schools and medical facilities, emphasizing the urgent need for civilian protection amid ongoing hostilities. Humanitarian agencies continue to monitor the situation closely as aid access remains limited in the region.
