Storm Nils claims life in northeastern Spain
Authorities in Catalonia reported that a 46-year-old woman died after the roof of a warehouse collapsed during the passage of Storm Nils in northeastern Spain. The woman was hospitalized in critical condition before succumbing to her injuries.
Storm Nils is the eighth significant depression to affect the Iberian Peninsula in 2026, producing wind gusts described as “exceptional” by regional authorities. In Catalonia, six people remain hospitalized, including four in serious condition. Officials have urged residents to exercise caution amid continued hazardous weather conditions.
Last week, the back-to-back depressions Leonardo and Marta caused severe flooding and the evacuation of thousands of residents in Andalusia. Forecasters now warn that Storm Oriana may bring violent winds, heavy rainfall, snow in some areas, and rough seas along the coasts, adding further challenges for emergency services and local communities.
