Warren Buffett steps down as Berkshire Hathaway chairman
Warren Buffett has stepped down as chairman of Berkshire Hathaway at the age of 96, marking another major stage in the leadership transition at the investment conglomerate he helped transform over several decades. The company announced on Friday that Buffett will become chairman emeritus with immediate effect while remaining a member of its board of directors.
Howard G. Buffett, Warren Buffett’s son, has been elected chairman of Berkshire Hathaway’s board. He has served as a company director since 1993 and will take on a role focused largely on preserving the corporate culture and principles that have shaped Berkshire over the years.
The change follows the earlier transfer of executive responsibilities to Greg Abel, who became Berkshire Hathaway’s chief executive as part of the company’s long-planned succession process. Abel will continue to oversee the group’s operations, while Howard Buffett takes responsibility for the board and the preservation of Berkshire’s organizational culture.
Although Buffett is stepping away from the chairmanship, he will not completely leave the company. Berkshire said he will remain on the board and continue providing his experience and perspective to directors. His new position as chairman emeritus recognizes his longstanding contribution to the company and its shareholders.
Buffett has been closely associated with Berkshire Hathaway since 1965 and played a central role in its transformation from a struggling textile business into a diversified conglomerate with interests spanning insurance, energy, rail transportation, manufacturing, services and retail. The company has grown into one of the largest publicly traded businesses in the United States.
The latest change therefore represents more than a change in the title of chairman. It completes another step in Berkshire Hathaway’s carefully prepared succession plan, with different responsibilities now distributed among Warren Buffett, Howard Buffett and Greg Abel.
For Berkshire, the transition also means maintaining continuity while gradually separating the company’s leadership structure from the figure who has been synonymous with it for decades. Warren Buffett’s continued presence on the board ensures that his experience remains available to the company even as day-to-day leadership moves further into the next generation.
