Spanish prime minister criticizes US actions off the coast of Venezuela

Spain’s Prime Minister has strongly denounced what he described as “extrajudicial operations” conducted by the United States in international waters near Venezuela. Speaking during a parliamentary session, he condemned the alleged activities as contrary to international law and urged respect for the sovereignty of all nations.

He stated that Spain “cannot remain silent” when international norms are violated, emphasizing that global stability depends on adherence to legal frameworks and cooperation among states. The remarks were prompted by reports of US military operations targeting suspected drug trafficking vessels in the Caribbean, which some international observers claim have extended into waters under Venezuelan jurisdiction.

The Spanish leader called for transparency and accountability from Washington, warning that such actions risk escalating tensions in a region already marked by political and humanitarian challenges. He reiterated Spain’s commitment to diplomacy and international law as the only legitimate means of addressing transnational security threats.

The US government has not immediately responded to these accusations but has previously defended its maritime operations in the Caribbean as essential measures against organized crime and narco-trafficking networks.

Analysts note that the dispute underscores growing friction between Washington and Madrid on matters of global governance and military conduct, signaling a potential shift in Spain’s foreign policy toward a more assertive defense of multilateralism.
