Spain investigates illegal textile waste trafficking from Morocco
Spanish authorities have uncovered a large illegal deposit of textile waste in La Línea’s Zabal industrial zone, raising fresh concerns about cross-border waste trafficking from Morocco. The discovery, made on September 25 by the Civil Guard’s environmental unit (Seprona), marks the third such case in two years in the Campo de Gibraltar region.
According to Spanish media reports, the waste—consisting of automotive textiles, fabric scraps, synthetic foam, and similar materials—was unloaded by trucks on unauthorized land with no municipal permits. Environmental groups warn the site poses serious fire hazards, soil contamination, and groundwater pollution risks.
Investigations suggest intermediaries linked to companies in the region may be importing the waste from Morocco without the necessary transboundary authorizations. Previous operations in 2023 and 2024 uncovered more than 3,500 tons of Moroccan textile waste illegally stored in nearby industrial areas.
Experts highlight that the main motive is to avoid the high costs of legal waste treatment, though authorities are also examining possible links to other illicit activities. Environmentalists stress that textile waste, whether natural or synthetic, has a long-lasting and harmful impact on ecosystems.
