Somalia rejects Algerian claims on Sahara stance

Somalia has firmly denied allegations made by Algerian media regarding its position on the Sahara conflict, reaffirming its unwavering support for Morocco’s territorial integrity. The Somali government clarified that its official stance is communicated solely through formal statements and official channels.

The statement was issued following media reports from outlets linked to the Algerian regime, which suggested a shift in Somalia’s position. Mogadishu dismissed these claims, reiterating its commitment to respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all nations.

Support for UN-led resolution

Somalia emphasized its recognition of the United Nations Security Council’s Resolution 2797, adopted on October 31, which endorses Morocco’s Autonomy Plan as the viable political framework to resolve the Sahara dispute. This resolution highlights the UN’s central role in the peaceful settlement of the conflict under the exclusive supervision of its Secretary-General and Personal Envoy.

Calling for serious and direct negotiations, Somalia urged all involved parties to prioritize a peaceful and final solution. The Somali government stated that this approach aligns with UN principles and reflects a commitment to fostering regional stability and cooperation.

Strengthening ties with Morocco

The diplomatic relationship between Somalia and Morocco was further reinforced during a recent meeting in Rabat between Somali Foreign Minister Abdisalam Abdi Ali and Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita. During the talks, Somalia reiterated its support for Morocco’s sovereignty over its entire territory.

In a joint statement, Minister Abdi Ali commended Morocco’s Autonomy Plan as a credible and realistic solution to the conflict, describing the dispute as an “artificial regional issue.” He praised Morocco’s efforts to find a lasting resolution and expressed full support for the UN Secretary-General and his efforts to mediate the conflict.

This reaffirmation of Somalia’s position underscores its commitment to peace and cooperation, while also rejecting misinformation aimed at undermining its diplomatic ties with Morocco.
