Scorching Heatwave Forecasted to Hit Moroccan Provinces
Morocco is bracing for an intense heatwave this weekend, with temperatures soaring up to 47 degrees Celsius across several regions. The General Directorate of Meteorology has issued a warning, predicting extreme heat from Saturday through Monday.
In the northern provinces, temperatures are expected to range between 42 and 44 degrees Celsius. Areas affected include Ouezzane, Moulay Yacoub, Fez, Taza, Sefrou, Taounate, Sidi Kacem, Khenifra, Azilal, and Khouribga. Meanwhile, Al Haouz will experience similar conditions, with the mercury rising to between 43 and 47 degrees in provinces such as Fquih Ben Salah, Beni Mellal, Settat, Marrakech, Kelaa Seraghna, Rehamna, Zagooura, and Taroudant.
Southern regions, including Tata, Guelmim, Ass-Zag, Bojdour, Es-Semara, and Oued Ed-Dahab, are also expected to endure these sweltering temperatures. On Monday, the heat will extend to Assa-Zag, Es-Semara, Boujdour, Aousserd, and Oued Eddahab.
This heatwave follows a tragic incident last month in Beni Mellal, where several vulnerable patients succumbed to the extreme conditions. The regional hospital reported 21 deaths, with 17 occurring within its walls. Most victims were elderly and suffered from chronic illnesses, exacerbated by the soaring temperatures.
The incident has sparked widespread concern about the adequacy of hospital facilities to protect patients during such events. In response, the Ministry of Health’s regional directorate emphasized the impact of the heat on vulnerable populations and urged residents to take precautions, such as avoiding direct sunlight during peak hours.
As the nation prepares for this severe weather, the focus remains on safeguarding the most at-risk individuals and preventing further tragedies.
