China landslide kills 21 people as extreme weather triggers deadly disasters
At least 21 people have died and seven others have been injured after a landslide struck a village in China’s northwestern Gansu province, according to state media reports.
The disaster occurred in Tanchang County, where rescue operations have now been completed after emergency teams searched the affected area and assisted residents trapped by the collapse.
China’s state news agency Xinhua reported that the latest casualties bring the total number of deaths caused by floods, severe storms and landslides across the country over the past two days to 36.
The landslide hit Renzang village in the city of Longnan on Tuesday, trapping 33 people under the debris. Rescue teams managed to save five people alive, while emergency responders continued operations to locate and assist those affected.
Multiple rescue units, including emergency services, firefighters and police teams, were deployed following the disaster to carry out search operations and provide assistance to residents.
The incident highlights the growing risks posed by extreme weather events in several parts of China, where heavy rainfall has repeatedly triggered flooding, landslides and other natural hazards in recent years.
Local authorities are continuing to monitor affected areas and provide medical support for the injured, while assessments are expected to determine the extent of damage caused by the landslide.
