Russia offers security assistance to Mozambique in fight against northern insurgency
Russia has expressed its readiness to assist Mozambique in addressing the armed insurgency that continues to affect the country's northern region, according to remarks by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov reported on Thursday by state news agency TASS.
Speaking in Moscow, Lavrov said Russia is prepared to respond to any request from the Mozambican government for support aimed at countering what he described as the persistent terrorist threat in northern Mozambique.
According to TASS, the Russian foreign minister stated that Moscow stands ready to provide assistance should its Mozambican partners formally seek help in confronting the ongoing security challenges.
Mozambique has spent several years battling Islamist insurgents, particularly in the northern province of Cabo Delgado, where attacks have displaced large numbers of civilians, disrupted economic activity and threatened major energy projects. The conflict has prompted support from regional military forces and international partners seeking to stabilize the area.
Lavrov's comments underscore Russia's willingness to expand its security cooperation with African nations as Moscow continues to strengthen diplomatic and defense ties across the continent.
No additional details were provided regarding the type of assistance Russia could offer, and there was no immediate indication that Mozambique had submitted a new formal request for military or security support.
