Safi and Essaouira: Ban on shellfish harvesting due to marine toxins

The Department of Maritime Fisheries has announced a ban on the harvesting and marketing of shellfish products from the Cap Beddouza and Oum Toyour Chouika areas, located respectively in the maritime districts of Safi and Essaouira. The ban will remain in place until the environment is fully cleared of contamination.

According to a statement from the department, analyses carried out by the National Institute of Fisheries Research (INRH) revealed the presence of marine biotoxins in mussels from these classified shellfish zones, at abnormally high levels.

As a result, the department advises consumers to purchase only packaged products bearing sanitary identification labels and sold in authorized outlets such as official markets.

The ministry further warned that shellfish sold in bulk or through unauthorized channels offer no health guarantees and pose a serious risk to public health.
