Russia launches massive drone and missile assault on Kyiv amid peace talks
Explosions rocked Ukraine's capital early Saturday as Russia unleashed a large-scale barrage of drones and ballistic missiles, killing at least one person in Kyiv and injuring more than a dozen others across the country. The strikes unfolded just as Ukrainian, Russian, and United States negotiators wrapped up the first day of historic trilateral peace talks in Abu Dhabi.
Air raid sirens blared around 1 a.m. local time on January 24, followed swiftly by blasts reported in districts on both sides of the Dnipro River. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko posted on Telegram that the city faced a massive enemy attack. Tymur Tkachenko, head of the capital's military administration, confirmed damage across five districts, with fires breaking out in at least two locations, including burning garages and a fuel tanker in Dniprovskyi, alongside hits to non-residential buildings in Holosiivskyi, Desnianskyi, and an office structure in Solomianskyi.
Military officials warned of ongoing ballistic missile threats, urging residents to shelter in place. In Kharkiv, Ukraine's second-largest city, Russian drones targeted multiple districts, wounding 11 people and damaging residential buildings, a shelter for displaced persons, a hospital, and a maternity ward, according to Mayor Ihor Terekhov.
The assault coincided with discussions in Abu Dhabi focused on parameters to end Russia's war and steps toward a just, lasting peace, as stated by Ukraine's lead negotiator Rustem Umerov. Talks were set to continue Saturday. This attack highlights Ukraine's deepening winter energy crisis, with an emergency in the power sector persisting after repeated Russian strikes on electrical infrastructure have left hundreds of thousands without heat, electricity, or water amid freezing temperatures. Klitschko again advised Kyiv residents to leave the city or stockpile food and water for several days.
