Elon Musk says SpaceX could challenge OpenAI and Anthropic in six months
Elon Musk has predicted that SpaceX could reach the forefront of artificial intelligence within roughly six months, as the aerospace company expands its involvement in the rapidly developing AI sector. Musk said he is cautiously optimistic that the company could produce a model comparable to leading systems from Anthropic and OpenAI within the next few months.
In posts published on X on September 24, Musk said SpaceX's AI development efforts are around three years old, compared with approximately six years for Anthropic and ten years for OpenAI. He argued that the shorter development history does not necessarily prevent SpaceX from closing the gap quickly if its current rate of progress continues.
Musk said he expects SpaceX to potentially develop an AI model at the level of Anthropic's Fable or OpenAI's GPT-6 within two to three months. He then projected that the company could reach what he described as the industry's “pole position” in about six months if its acceleration remains strong. These are Musk's own projections rather than independently established forecasts.
The entrepreneur's argument extends beyond the capabilities of AI models themselves. Musk has emphasized the importance of computing infrastructure, arguing that rapidly bringing large amounts of computing capacity online is one of the most difficult challenges facing AI developers. He has pointed to SpaceX's experience in building complex physical infrastructure as an advantage that could support its expansion into AI.
Musk has also argued that increasing model intelligence does not necessarily provide additional value for every type of task once an AI system has already exceeded the capabilities required for that task. His comments suggest that he views efficiency and access to large-scale computing resources as important factors alongside raw model performance.
The AI ambitions associated with Musk's businesses have been expanding rapidly, with large-scale computing infrastructure becoming a central part of the strategy. Industry reports have described plans for substantial GPU deployments and data-centre capacity, reflecting the enormous computational requirements involved in training and operating advanced AI models.
However, Musk's prediction comes in a highly competitive market where OpenAI and Anthropic continue to develop increasingly capable systems. Independent benchmark comparisons cited by industry publications currently place leading models from Anthropic and OpenAI ahead of SpaceXAI's reported top-performing systems, although rankings can change quickly as new models are released.
The competition is also increasingly focused on the infrastructure needed to support AI. Semiconductor availability, data-centre construction, electricity supplies and access to advanced computing hardware have become strategic considerations for companies seeking to scale their models.
Musk's comments therefore highlight a broader shift in the AI industry, where competition is no longer limited to software and model development. Companies are increasingly seeking control over computing resources, chips and large-scale infrastructure as they attempt to accelerate the development and deployment of advanced artificial intelligence.
Whether SpaceX can achieve the timetable outlined by Musk will depend on the pace of its model development, infrastructure expansion and ability to translate computing resources into competitive AI performance. For now, the six-month target remains a projection from Musk rather than a confirmed industry outcome.
