Agadir police arrest Swedish national wanted by Interpol over attempted homicide case
Moroccan authorities have arrested a 31-year-old Swedish national in Agadir after an identity check revealed that he was the subject of an Interpol Red Notice linked to an alleged attempted homicide case in Sweden.
The arrest took place on Friday evening, September 25, during an operation carried out by the Agadir prefectural judicial police service in coordination with the General Directorate for Territorial Surveillance (DGST).
Identity check leads to international alert
According to the information provided by Moroccan authorities, the man was identified during police checks in Agadir. A search of international police databases subsequently showed that Swedish judicial authorities had requested an Interpol Red Notice against him.
The alert concerns his alleged involvement in a case of attempted intentional homicide in Sweden. The Moroccan authorities did not provide further details about the circumstances of the alleged offence or the identity of any other individuals involved in the case.
The arrest followed an international judicial cooperation mechanism through which Moroccan authorities were able to verify the suspect’s status using Interpol databases.
Extradition procedure initiated
Following the arrest, the Swedish national was placed under an extradition procedure on instructions from the competent public prosecutor’s office.
The case now moves into the judicial cooperation phase, during which the relevant Moroccan authorities will process the extradition request in accordance with applicable procedures.
Morocco’s National Central Bureau for Interpol in Rabat, operating under the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN), was tasked with notifying its counterpart in Sweden of the arrest.
International police cooperation
The case highlights the role of Interpol’s international alert system in facilitating cooperation between national law-enforcement agencies.
A Red Notice is an international request to locate and provisionally arrest a person pending extradition or another judicial procedure. It does not, by itself, constitute an international arrest warrant or establish a person’s guilt.
In this case, the Moroccan arrest was carried out after the suspect’s identity was checked against international police records, allowing the authorities to identify the Swedish judicial request and initiate the relevant legal process.
The next steps will depend on the extradition proceedings and the judicial authorities involved in both Morocco and Sweden.
