Romuald Wadagni elected president of Benin with 94.05% of votes
Benin has elected its new president, with Romuald Wadagni winning a decisive victory in the presidential election with 94.05% of the vote, according to provisional results announced by the national electoral commission.
Wadagni, who previously served as Minister of Finance, was the clear frontrunner in the race and represented the ruling political coalition. His victory marks a continuation of the current political direction established under outgoing President Patrice Talon.
He is set to officially succeed Talon, who steps down after completing the constitutional limit of two terms in office. The transition is being presented as part of a structured democratic process in the country.
The election featured a limited field of candidates, including opposition figure Paul Hounkpè, who received 5.95% of the vote. Voter turnout was recorded at approximately 58.75%, reflecting moderate electoral participation.
Analysts note that the overwhelming result highlights the strong position of the ruling coalition within the country’s political system. Supporters argue that continuity will help maintain economic stability and ongoing development programs.
However, observers also emphasize the importance of political pluralism and inclusive dialogue to strengthen democratic institutions in the long term.
The official results are still subject to final confirmation, but Wadagni’s victory is expected to shape Benin’s political and economic agenda in the coming years.
