RNI leadership transition: Mohamed Chouki emerges as candidate to succeed Aziz Akhannouch
Morocco’s political scene is entering a new phase as the National Rally of Independents (RNI) prepares for a leadership transition. During a meeting held at the party’s central headquarters in Rabat, the RNI’s political bureau approved the submission of Mohamed Chouki’s candidacy for the party’s presidency to the upcoming extraordinary national congress scheduled for February 7 in El Jadida.
The decision followed the closure of the official deadline for candidacy submissions and the review of the submitted files. According to a statement issued by the party, Mohamed Chouki’s application is currently the only one formally registered, positioning him as a potential sole candidate for the leadership of the ruling party.
This development stands out as one of the key organizational outcomes of the political bureau’s meeting, which forms part of the broader preparations for the extraordinary congress. The event is expected to shape the party’s next political and organizational phase at a time when the RNI continues to lead the government.
Chaired by Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch, the meeting also addressed national political, social and economic issues, alongside progress reports on congress preparations. Party leaders view the congress as a strategic moment to strengthen internal cohesion and enhance organizational performance.
Unconfirmed reports suggest that a second candidacy could emerge, with former Minister of Justice and Human Rights Mohamed Aujjar potentially entering the race, although no official announcement has been made so far.
A new chapter for the RNI
Earlier this month, Aziz Akhannouch announced his decision not to seek a third term as party president. He explained that the move aims to encourage leadership renewal and allow a new figure to emerge at the helm of the RNI.
Since taking over the party’s leadership in 2016, Akhannouch has overseen a major transformation of the RNI, culminating in its victory in the 2021 legislative elections and the formation of the current government. While stepping aside from party leadership, he has reaffirmed his commitment to fulfilling his governmental duties until the end of the legislative term.
Political observers see this transition as a positive signal for Morocco’s political life, highlighting the importance of leadership rotation, institutional strength and democratic renewal within political parties.
