Putin rejects Trump peace plan, demands unconditional victory in Ukraine conflict
Russian President Vladimir Putin has signaled a firm rejection of the Trump administration's recently proposed 28-point peace plan aimed at ending the war in Ukraine. During a visit to a hidden military command post, Putin ordered his top generals to secure an unconditional surrender of Ukrainian forces, emphasizing that the primary goal is the “unconditional achievement of the goals of the special military operation.”
Putin sharply criticized Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's government, labeling it a “criminal gang” that has seized power for personal enrichment amid ongoing corruption scandals. The Russian military claimed to have captured the strategic city of Kupiansk, a claim strongly denied by Ukrainian officials who assert continued control and active counter-operations in the region.
The Trump-brokered peace framework demands significant territorial concessions from Ukraine, including the entirety of the Donbas region, military downsizing to 600,000 troops, recognition of Russian as an official language, and abandonment of NATO aspirations. In return, the plan offers vague security guarantees backed by the United States.
Ukraine's leadership expressed cautious openness to reviewing the plan, seeking assurances that any peace agreement fully respects the country's sovereignty. European leaders have voiced concern over the proposal, warning it amounts to a strategic capitulation and could undermine Ukraine’s defense capabilities. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot notably stated that “peace cannot mean capitulation.”
Meanwhile, the conflict escalates with Russia launching deadly attacks on civilian infrastructure, including a drone and missile barrage killing dozens in western Ukraine. The evolving military and diplomatic standoff underscores growing international tensions over the war’s trajectory and potential resolution.
