Poland opens investigation into attack on UN peacekeepers in Lebanon
Poland has launched a formal investigation into an attack targeting its soldiers serving in a United Nations peacekeeping mission in Lebanon.
The incident occurred during a patrol conducted by the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), when an improvised explosive device was used against a Polish military convoy. According to authorities, the attack did not result in major damage due to the protective features of the military vehicle, but one soldier was injured.
Prosecutors confirmed that the wounded serviceman sustained injuries to the head and face and received medical attention. The investigation aims to identify those responsible and determine the circumstances surrounding the attack.
UNIFIL, deployed since 1978, operates in southern Lebanon to monitor hostilities and support regional stability. However, the mission has faced increasing risks in recent years, as tensions in the Middle East have escalated. Peacekeeping forces have occasionally been caught in crossfire or targeted in incidents linked to broader regional conflicts.
Polish authorities stressed the importance of ensuring accountability and protecting their personnel serving abroad. The case also highlights the ongoing challenges faced by international peacekeeping missions operating in volatile environments.
The investigation is expected to proceed in coordination with international partners, reflecting the need for cooperation in addressing security threats in conflict zones.
