Plans to revive Menéndez Pelayo sidewalk expansion

The Madrid City Council is considering revisiting a 2020 project aimed at enhancing the pedestrian experience along Menéndez Pelayo Avenue, located near El Retiro Park. Mayor José Luis Martínez-Almeida confirmed the city's intent to move forward with improving pedestrian space in the area. The original plan included widening sidewalks, adding a segregated bike lane, and constructing a large underground parking garage. The controversial parking proposal sparked protests from local residents who advocated for reduced traffic and more public space for pedestrians, a concern further amplified by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Almeida has now announced that the parking garage is no longer part of the plan, but the council remains committed to expanding sidewalks and improving conditions for public transportation. This would facilitate a balance between pedestrian accessibility and local businesses. Community members have also expressed support for reducing vehicle lanes to improve the park's environment, reduce traffic speed, and enhance the overall quality of life in the area.

A similar approach to the layout of Serrano Street, which has wide sidewalks and restricted parking, is being considered. The revised plan would replace one of the traffic lanes with a bus lane to promote public transport along this key central Madrid avenue. Additionally, some residents are advocating for the return of a tree-lined boulevard from the 1960s, which used to run through Menéndez Pelayo.

The council is also preparing a comprehensive plan for El Retiro Park's future, set to be approved in May, with input from both residents and opposition groups. Some of the proposed actions include increasing park surveillance, providing additional public amenities, and reducing vehicle traffic to ensure the park remains a treasured green space for all.
