Palau to host migrants expelled from the U.S. in $7.5 million agreement

The Pacific island nation of Palau has agreed to accept up to 75 non-U.S. migrants being expelled from the United States under a $7.5 million agreement, officials from both countries announced Wednesday.

The migrants, who come from third countries and have no criminal charges, will live and work in Palau, a country of roughly 20,000 inhabitants spread across volcanic islands and coral atolls. The U.S. funding will support public services and infrastructure projects, including a new hospital and disaster response capacity improvements.

Under the deal, Palau retains the right to approve each individual case, ensuring that arrivals contribute meaningfully to the Pacific state. The agreement follows a phone call between Palau President Surangel Whipps and U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau.

The arrangement also includes additional U.S. support: $6 million for public sector pension reforms and $2 million for law enforcement initiatives. Palau, independent since 1994, hosts U.S. military facilities under a “Compact of Free Association,” with American aid contributing to national defense and regional security.
