New Power Plant in Niamey Strengthens Morocco-Niger Energy Cooperation
Located in the Gamkaley industrial zone, this state-of-the-art facility has a production capacity of 22.5 MVA (20 MW).
The King Mohammed VI power plant, a gift from Morocco to the Republic of Niger, was inaugurated on Thursday in Niamey, marking a significant milestone in Morocco-Niger relations. The ceremony, attended by various dignitaries, including Nigerien government officials, diplomats, international organizations, Moroccan expatriates, and local civil society representatives, underscored the importance of this development for both countries.
Among the key attendees were Brigadier General Abdourrahmane Tiani, President of Niger's National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland (CNSP), and Prime Minister Ali Mahamane Lamine Zeine. The facility, situated in the Gamkaley industrial zone, boasts a production capacity of 22.5 MVA (20 MW), and is aimed at addressing Niger's ongoing energy challenges. The plant will help improve electricity access and strengthen the country’s energy infrastructure, a critical need in light of the region’s energy crisis.
This donation is a testament to Morocco’s commitment to being a strategic partner in Niger's development, and is also part of a broader vision to foster African solidarity and support sustainable development across the continent. The completion of this power plant is a concrete example of Morocco's continued efforts to assist Sahelian countries in overcoming development challenges.
King Mohammed VI’s initiatives, such as the Royal Initiative to enhance Sahel nations’ access to the Atlantic Ocean, are central to his vision of fostering African integration. In December 2023, Niger’s Foreign Minister Bakary Yaou Sangare emphasized the significance of these projects during a ministerial coordination meeting in Marrakech. He expressed hopes that the Royal Initiative would lead to tangible benefits, including the commercialization of national resources and enhanced regional connectivity and trade.
In his November 2023 Green March speech, King Mohammed VI emphasized the importance of the Atlantic coast as a gateway to Africa and the Americas. He voiced his desire to rehabilitate Morocco’s national coastline, particularly in the Moroccan Sahara region, and to transform the region into a hub for human interaction and economic integration. The ultimate goal is to strengthen Morocco’s role as a regional leader, contributing to Africa’s collective rise in an increasingly competitive global economy.
The construction of the power plant was completed in a notably short timeframe, thanks to the efforts of a joint team from the Moroccan Agency for International Cooperation (AMCI), the National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE), and Niger’s National Electricity Company (NIGELEC). This project marks another significant step in strengthening bilateral relations between the two nations, aligning with a shared vision for regional stability and prosperity.
This collaboration highlights Morocco’s commitment to being a key partner in Africa’s energy future and further solidifies its role in the development of the Sahel region.
