Myanmar Junta leader elected vice president amid ongoing political crisis
Myanmar’s military leader Min Aung Hlaing has been elected vice president by the lower house of parliament, marking a significant step toward consolidating his political power following the 2021 coup.
The vote comes after legislative elections organized by the ruling junta, which authorities have presented as a transition back to civilian governance. However, the process has been widely criticized by international observers, who argue that it lacks genuine political competition and transparency.
Min Aung Hlaing, who seized power by overthrowing the elected government, is expected to play a central role in the formation of the country’s next leadership. Under the constitution, he would need to step down from his military position to assume the presidency, although analysts believe he could retain strong influence over the armed forces.
Myanmar continues to face a deep internal conflict, with pro-democracy groups and ethnic armed organizations engaged in widespread fighting against the military authorities. The humanitarian situation remains severe, with millions displaced and a large portion of the population living in poverty.
