Morocco's Airports See Record-Breaking Passenger Traffic in First Half of 2024

ONDA Reports Double-Digit Growth in Passenger Numbers and Aircraft Movements

Morocco's airports have experienced unprecedented growth in passenger traffic during the first half of 2024, as reported by the Office National des Aéroports (ONDA). The number of passengers soared by 19% compared to the same period in 2023, reaching a staggering 15.1 million. This milestone marks a significant achievement for the nation’s aviation sector.

Significant Growth Across Major Airports

Several airports have contributed to this remarkable growth. Rabat-Sale Airport led the way with a 40% increase in passenger numbers, followed by Agadir with a 34% rise, and Marrakech, which saw a 29% jump. Other airports, including Tetouan, Tangier, and Fes, also reported substantial increases ranging from 12% to 23%.

Boost in Domestic and International Travel

While international flights continue to dominate, domestic travel has shown promising growth. Domestic passenger traffic reached over 1.5 million, representing a 22% increase compared to the first half of 2023. International travel also saw a 19% rise, with over 13.5 million passengers. This growth is reflected across various regions: Europe saw a 20% increase, Africa 16%, and the Middle and Far East 15%.

Rise in Aircraft Movements

The surge in passenger numbers is mirrored by a 15% increase in aircraft movements, totaling more than 111,000 flights in the first half of 2024. Casablanca's Mohammed V Airport was the busiest, handling 35% of the traffic, followed by Marrakech Menara at 26% and Agadir Al Massira at 9%.

Surge in Air Cargo Traffic

In addition to passenger and aircraft movements, air freight traffic witnessed a significant boost. ONDA reported a 24% increase in air cargo, with volumes reaching over 46,209 tonnes. This uptick suggests a potential rise in economic activities and trade facilitated through Moroccan airports.

Factors Behind the Growth

While ONDA has not detailed the specific reasons for this surge, several factors likely contribute to the increase in passenger and cargo traffic. Enhanced tourism activities, the easing of travel restrictions post-pandemic, and the expansion of airline routes to and from Morocco are potential drivers of this growth.

Morocco's aviation sector is clearly on an upward trajectory, with record-breaking figures highlighting the country's growing importance as a travel and trade hub.
