Morocco’s government majority reviews key political and economic progress

In Rabat, the government majority held its regular meeting chaired by Mr. Aziz Akhannouch, leader of the National Rally of Independents party, alongside members of the collective leadership of the Authenticity and Modernity Party, Mr. Nizar Baraka, Secretary-General of the Istiqlal Party, and other senior officials. The meeting focused on reviewing the latest political, economic, and social situations in Morocco, as well as discussing national and international matters.

Following a serious and in-depth debate marked by shared political responsibility, the government majority affirmed several key points:

First, it praised the positive momentum and consecutive diplomatic successes Morocco has achieved, notably regarding the Sahara issue, thanks to King Mohammed VI’s great efforts. This progress was reinforced by the United Kingdom’s recent recognition that autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty represents the most credible, pragmatic, and viable solution. This marks a historic shift, making the UK the third permanent member of the UN Security Council to support Morocco's initiative, after the United States and France. This broad international consensus strengthens the prospects for a final resolution of the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.

Second, the majority condemned Israel’s ongoing attacks against Palestinian civilians and violations of the ceasefire, which undermine peace prospects in the region. It reiterated Morocco’s position, led by King Mohammed VI as Chairman of the Al-Quds Committee, emphasizing that the ceasefire must be respected without political bargaining, and that a just and lasting solution requires establishing a Palestinian state within the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

Third, the government majority commended the achievements made in implementing the social state project under the patronage of His Majesty, including expanded health coverage, direct social support programs, housing aid, and major reforms in health and education sectors. It also highlighted unprecedented gains for workers realized through social dialogue, reaffirming the government’s commitment to social justice, regional equity, and dignity for all citizens, contributing to inclusive and sustainable growth.

Fourth, the majority praised the government’s success in building a resilient and productive Moroccan economy, able to withstand domestic and international challenges. The national economy recorded a growth rate of 4.2% in Q1 2025, supported by strong performances in agriculture, industry, foreign trade, and tourism. Moreover, the creation of at least 282,000 new jobs between early 2024 and early 2025 confirms the effectiveness of government policies to boost economic recovery and employment.

Fifth, it acknowledged the swift government response to King Mohammed VI’s directives for sustainable national herd restructuring through a comprehensive program supporting livestock breeders. This program includes debt rescheduling, feed support, cattle identification, preventive veterinary campaigns, and technical guidance for breeders.

Sixth, while praising government efforts on water security, energy transition, and digital transformation projects, the majority also valued the legislative work in cooperation with parliament. It called for continued completion of legislative reforms to ensure effective implementation of government commitments.

Finally, the government majority expressed appreciation for the unity within its coalition, aligning positions on critical issues to enhance government efficiency and commitment to its program. It also welcomed responsible opposition participation, recognizing its role in oversight, constructive criticism, and enriching public debate, which strengthens Morocco’s democratic practice.
