Morocco reopens embassy in Damascus, marking new chapter in bilateral ties

Morocco has officially reopened its embassy in Damascus, resuming full diplomatic operations after a 13-year closure. The move signifies a renewed commitment to strengthening relations between the two nations following years of turmoil in Syria.

The decision was first announced by His Majesty King Mohammed VI during the 34th Arab League Summit in Baghdad on May 17. In his address, the monarch emphasized the importance of opening "broader perspectives in the historical relations between our two countries and our two peoples."

The embassy was originally closed in 2012 at the height of the Syrian civil war, a conflict that erupted after widespread protests demanding basic rights. The war led to the fall of former Syrian President Bashar Al Assad last year, ending a five-decade dictatorship and ushering in a transitional government under interim President Ahmed Al Sharaa.

Royal support for Syria’s recovery

His Majesty King Mohammed VI reaffirmed Morocco’s historical stance on Syria, expressing solidarity with the Syrian people in their quest for freedom, security, and stability. In a letter addressed to President Al Sharaa, the monarch stressed the importance of respecting Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

On the day of the announcement, Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Al Shaibani expressed gratitude for Morocco’s decision, calling it a "milestone in the renewal of Arab solidarity."

Renewed diplomatic engagement

The reopening of the embassy is part of Morocco’s administrative efforts, including renovation work to relocate operations to a new facility. This step reflects the evolving relationship between Morocco and Syria, aligning with a broader trend among Arab nations to normalize ties with Damascus.

Restoring full diplomatic services underscores Morocco’s commitment to fostering stability and recovery in Syria while reinforcing the kingdom’s role in regional diplomacy. Officials see this move as a significant milestone in rebuilding trust and cooperation between the two nations.
