Morocco prioritizes sustainable mobility in its development vision

Morocco, under the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, has made sustainable mobility a cornerstone of its national development strategy, according to Nizar Baraka, Minister of Equipment and Water. Speaking at the international seminar “Accessibility and Mobility in Urban and Peri-Urban Areas: Challenges and Opportunities for the Cities of Tomorrow,” held in Fes, Baraka emphasized the country’s commitment to transforming its transport systems to address urban challenges and foster sustainable growth.

Baraka outlined Morocco’s efforts to modernize transport networks, expand efficient public transit, encourage active forms of mobility, and adopt new technologies to manage traffic and reduce carbon emissions. He highlighted these initiatives as part of a broader strategy that integrates international dialogue and collaboration to build sustainable mobility solutions.

The seminar, part of the World Road Association’s (PIARC) official program, brought together 200 participants, including policymakers, experts, researchers, and practitioners, to discuss global mobility challenges and opportunities. Baraka stressed that the event underscores Morocco’s recognition of mobility as a global issue requiring collective action.

“Mobility is not only a fundamental right but also a driver of social justice, economic growth, and environmental sustainability,” Baraka said. Addressing urbanization trends, he noted the urgent need to tackle rising congestion, environmental degradation, and social fragmentation while unlocking cities' transformative potential through strategic planning and technological innovation.

The three-day seminar, hosted by the Moroccan Permanent Association of Road Congresses (AMPCR) in partnership with PIARC and the Private University of Fes (UPF), aims to foster scientific and professional dialogue on urban mobility policies. The program includes five technical sessions and a roundtable discussion aligned with PIARC’s 2024–2027 strategic plan, focusing on topics such as transport planning, regulation, safety, and sustainability.

Baraka described the event as a platform for forging new partnerships, launching joint projects, and advancing ambitious policies to create inclusive, smart, and environmentally sustainable cities. He emphasized the importance of aligning political will, innovation, and strategic vision to address global mobility challenges effectively.

The seminar also highlighted Morocco’s role as a regional leader in sustainable urban development, offering a blueprint for integrating social equity, resilience, and environmental stewardship into mobility planning.
