Morocco earns global acclaim for economic strategy and regional leadership
Morocco has received high praise from the United Nations’ top trade official for its exemplary economic development model and its contributions to international cooperation.
Rebecca Grynspan, Secretary-General of the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), highlighted Morocco as a “model for us” during discussions with Moroccan officials in Geneva. She underscored the country’s achievements in advancing South-South partnerships and sharing expertise with other developing nations.
Recognition for innovation and investment resilience
Following her meeting with Morocco’s Minister of Industry and Trade, Ryad Mezzour, Grynspan commended Morocco’s innovative approach to port operations, streamlined trade systems, and its effective collaboration between the public and private sectors.
Morocco’s ability to attract significant foreign investment, despite global declines in capital flows, was also spotlighted. Grynspan attributed this success to the country’s economic diversification and its growing manufacturing sector, which have bolstered its global competitiveness.
Ambassador Omar Zniber, Morocco’s Permanent Representative to the UN in Geneva, and Abdelouahed Rahal, the Trade Director General, also participated in talks. These discussions explored potential collaborations between UNCTAD and Morocco in areas such as food security, logistics, and commerce.
HM King Mohammed VI’s Atlantic Initiative takes center stage
His Majesty King Mohammed VI’s Atlantic Initiative was a key topic of discussion. The initiative aims to strengthen ties among Atlantic-facing African nations through shared development, increased connectivity, and mutual support among developing countries.
“The Secretary-General showed strong interest in His Majesty the King’s Atlantic Initiative,” Mezzour stated, describing the talks as highly productive. He emphasized Morocco’s growing role as a strategic partner and a source of transferable development models.
Mezzour’s visit to Geneva, where he attended the 16th session of UNCTAD, included meetings with leaders from international organizations, UN agencies, and government ministers. He also chaired a ministerial session of the Global System of Trade Preferences among Developing Countries, further enhancing Morocco’s international profile.
