Morocco disrupts terror plot: 21-year-old woman arrested over ISIS links
Morocco’s Central Bureau of Judicial Investigations (BCIJ) has arrested a 21-year-old female student in Rabat, accusing her of planning a terrorist attack targeting a religious site in the city. The arrest, announced on Friday, highlights Morocco's ongoing efforts to thwart extremist threats.
The suspect, a student at a technical institute in Rabat, was detained following intelligence provided by the General Directorate for Territorial Surveillance (DGST). Authorities allege she is affiliated with ISIS and was in the advanced stages of preparing a terror operation that posed a significant risk to public safety.
Foiled plans and gathered evidence
Close coordination between Moroccan and French intelligence agencies played a pivotal role in identifying the suspect, monitoring her activities, and intervening before her plans could materialize. Investigators revealed that she had begun acquiring knowledge of bomb-making and toxic substances, and had already secured materials for the operation.
A search of her residence yielded flammable substances, extremist literature, and books promoting radical ideologies. Preliminary findings suggest she acted alone but was potentially influenced or guided by larger extremist networks.
Broader counterterrorism efforts
The suspect is undergoing interrogation under Morocco’s anti-terrorism legal framework. Authorities aim to uncover how she was recruited and whether she maintains links with other terrorist groups or individuals.
This arrest underscores Morocco’s proactive counterterrorism strategy, emphasizing preemptive measures against both domestic and international threats. It also highlights the country’s robust security partnership with France, particularly in intelligence sharing and joint investigations.
Earlier this week, Morocco’s Director General of National Security and Territorial Surveillance, Abdellatif Hammouchi, and French National Police Director Louis Laugier signed a cooperation agreement in Rabat. The pact strengthens collaboration in combating transnational crime and terrorism, reflecting the close ties between the two nations in addressing shared security challenges.
