Sri Lanka tightens prison security after deadly riot exposes overcrowding crisis

Sri Lankan authorities have strengthened security measures across the country's prison system after a riot at Mahara Prison left one person dead and six others injured, highlighting mounting concerns over chronic overcrowding and deteriorating conditions inside correctional facilities.

The violence erupted on Saturday at the prison, located approximately 15 kilometers from the commercial capital, Colombo, prompting officials to increase security at major prisons, particularly those in and around the capital.

Authorities also imposed an overnight police curfew covering three nearby villages as security forces worked to restore order.

Prison facilities suffer extensive damage

According to officials, inmates damaged several key facilities during the unrest, including the prison hospital, kitchen and training center. Administrative offices were also targeted, with important records reportedly destroyed after prisoners set fire to part of the complex.

The disturbance began during family visiting hours, when groups of inmates climbed onto prison rooftops before the situation escalated into widespread violence.

An investigation is expected to determine the sequence of events and assess the full extent of the damage.

Overcrowding remains a major challenge

The latest riot has once again drawn attention to the severe overcrowding affecting Sri Lanka's correctional system.

Mahara Prison was housing approximately 4,100 inmates, nearly four times its intended capacity. Nationwide, the country's 22 prisons hold more than 41,000 convicted prisoners, despite having a combined official capacity of roughly 11,000.

In addition to convicted inmates, Sri Lankan prisons also accommodate thousands of detainees awaiting trial, placing further strain on already overcrowded facilities.

Recent violence raises concerns over prison management

The Mahara incident comes only weeks after a deadly confrontation at Negombo Prison, where clashes between rival inmate groups resulted in the deaths of 10 prison officers and 20 prisoners, making it the country's deadliest prison disturbance in more than a decade.

That earlier riot required the intervention of police special forces, the military and the navy to regain control.

The latest unrest is expected to intensify calls for comprehensive reforms aimed at improving prison security, reducing overcrowding and strengthening the management of Sri Lanka's correctional institutions.
