Moroccan students remain the largest foreign student community in France

Moroccan students continue to hold the position as the largest foreign student community in France, according to newly released data from Campus France, the agency responsible for promoting higher education in the country.

Over 42,000 Moroccan students are currently enrolled in French universities, representing 10% of the international student population. The majority of these students, 56%, opt for multidisciplinary universities, while a growing number choose specialized schools in fields such as engineering and business.

France’s total foreign student population stands at 445,000, accounting for 15% of all students in the country. Alongside Morocco, China, Italy, and Senegal remain the primary countries of origin for international students, though France has seen a decline in Chinese enrollment over the past five years. Meanwhile, Italy and Spain have reported a 35% increase in their student enrollments.

Moroccans excel in elite institutions

The academic achievements of Moroccan students in France have also been noted. Campus France highlighted their strong performance in entrance exams for the country’s top schools. A spokesperson recently emphasized that Moroccan students have consistently ranked among the top foreign candidates admitted to prestigious institutions like Ecole Polytechnique.

In the current academic year alone, 24 Moroccan students secured places at this globally renowned institution, known for its rigorous academic standards. Master’s programs remain the most popular choice, accounting for 56% of enrollments, followed by bachelor’s and doctoral programs. Around 14% of Moroccan students pursue studies in engineering, reinforcing their presence in technical and scientific fields.

A growing legacy

The strong representation of Moroccan students reflects long-standing cultural, historical, and educational ties between the two nations. For years, Moroccan students have been recognized for their academic excellence and ability to succeed in competitive environments.

France remains an attractive destination for Moroccan students due to the high quality of education, particularly in mathematics, engineering, and business. Their continued success reinforces Morocco’s position as a key contributor to France’s vibrant international academic community.
