Microsoft commits $17.5 billion to accelerate AI adoption across India

Microsoft has unveiled a transformative $17.5 billion investment in India, marking its largest in Asia to date. This ambitious commitment aims to advance India's cloud and artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure, workforce skilling, and digital sovereignty from 2026 to 2029. The initiative builds on Microsoft's earlier $3 billion investment, which is set for completion by the end of 2026.

Scaling AI infrastructure and innovation

The cornerstone of Microsoft's investment is the development of sovereign-ready hyperscale infrastructure, including the India South Central cloud region in Hyderabad. Scheduled to go live in mid-2026, it will be the company’s largest hyperscale region in India, featuring three availability zones. Microsoft will also expand existing data centers in Chennai, Hyderabad, and Pune to boost resilience and performance for enterprises, startups, and public sector entities.

To integrate AI into public systems, Microsoft is collaborating with the Ministry of Labour and Employment to enhance platforms like e-Shram and the National Career Service (NCS). These updates, powered by Azure OpenAI services, aim to benefit over 310 million informal workers through AI-driven job matching, resumé creation, and skill trend analytics.

Workforce skilling and digital sovereignty

Microsoft is doubling its commitment to equip 20 million Indians with AI skills by 2030, surpassing its initial goal of training 10 million. These initiatives, under the ADVANTA(I)GE India project, have already trained 5.6 million individuals since January 2025, creating significant economic opportunities for thousands.

The company is also rolling out Sovereign Public Cloud and Sovereign Private Cloud solutions to strengthen India’s digital sovereignty. These services ensure compliance, governance, and data security for businesses operating in regulated sectors such as government, healthcare, and finance. By the end of 2025, Microsoft 365 Copilot will process data entirely within India, enhancing compliance and performance for local organizations.

Shaping India’s AI future

Microsoft’s investment aligns with India’s vision for AI as a driver of inclusive growth. By combining hyperscale infrastructure, robust skilling programs, and sovereign-ready solutions, Microsoft and India are setting new benchmarks for AI adoption at a national scale. This partnership positions India as a global leader in AI innovation, fostering equitable access and transformative opportunities for its citizens.
