Marjane Satrapi, Persepolis creator, dies at 56 in Paris
Marjane Satrapi, the Franco-Iranian graphic novelist and filmmaker behind Persepolis, has died in Paris at the age of 56. Her family announced her death on Thursday, marking the end of a career that reshaped contemporary graphic literature and brought Iranian personal history to a global audience.
Born in Rasht, Iran, in 1969, Satrapi grew up during the Islamic Revolution and the Iran-Iraq war. These formative years became the foundation of Persepolis, her autobiographical graphic novel first published in French in 2000. The work used stark black-and-white drawings to depict childhood under political repression and the experience of exile in Europe. Its international edition expanded her readership and established her as a leading voice in graphic storytelling.
Satrapi expanded her work beyond literature into cinema. She co-directed the animated adaptation of Persepolis released in 2007, which received international recognition and an Academy Award nomination for best animated feature. She later directed live-action films including The Voices and Radioactive, a biographical drama about Marie Curie. Her work consistently blended personal narrative with political context, focusing on identity, displacement, and freedom.
In recent years, Satrapi became increasingly outspoken on human rights issues in Iran. She participated in collaborative projects supporting protest movements and publicly rejected France’s Legion of Honour in 2025, criticizing its stance on Iran. Her family stated she died “of sadness” following the death of her husband in 2025, a loss that led to her withdrawal from public life.
Her legacy spans literature, film, and political expression. Persepolis remains widely studied in schools and universities and has been translated into numerous languages. Human rights organizations and cultural institutions have paid tribute to her influence, highlighting her role in giving visibility to Iranian experiences through art.
