Iceland seeks deportation of anti-whaling activists after sea protest
Icelandic authorities have requested the deportation of 21 anti-whaling activists following their arrest during a maritime protest that disrupted commercial whaling operations off the country's coast.
The activists have been held in Reykjavik since being detained after an operation involving the Bandero, a vessel operated by the foundation established by marine conservation campaigner Paul Watson. Icelandic police have also requested that the group be barred from re-entering the country.
The incident unfolded after the Bandero allegedly interfered with the activities of the Hvalur 9, one of only two commercial whaling vessels still operating in Iceland. Authorities boarded the protest ship on Thursday evening, bringing the demonstration to an end.
The confrontation has once again drawn international attention to Iceland's controversial commercial whaling industry, which remains one of the few in the world still engaged in the practice. Environmental organizations argue that whale hunting is incompatible with modern conservation efforts, while supporters of the industry defend it as part of the country's maritime traditions and a lawful economic activity.
The legal proceedings against the detained activists are expected to test Iceland's approach to balancing the right to peaceful protest with the enforcement of maritime regulations designed to protect commercial operations at sea.
The case also highlights the continuing role of Paul Watson's movement in high-profile direct-action campaigns targeting whaling fleets. Such operations have frequently generated international debate, placing Iceland's whaling policies under renewed global scrutiny.
As immigration and judicial authorities review the police request, the outcome could influence how future environmental protests are handled in Icelandic waters, particularly those involving foreign activists seeking to challenge commercial whaling activities.
