Argentina and South Korea strengthen partnership on strategic minerals

Argentina and South Korea have agreed to deepen their cooperation in the strategic minerals sector, reinforcing efforts to secure reliable supplies of critical raw materials essential for clean energy technologies, electric vehicle production, and advanced manufacturing.

The partnership reflects the growing global competition for critical minerals as countries seek to strengthen supply chains that support the transition to low-carbon economies. The agreement focuses on expanding collaboration in mineral exploration, extraction, processing, and refining while encouraging greater bilateral investment and industrial cooperation.

Argentina plays a key role in the global lithium market, ranking among the world's leading producers of the mineral, which is widely used in rechargeable batteries for electric vehicles and large-scale energy storage systems. Its abundant natural resources have attracted increasing international interest from governments and companies seeking long-term access to strategic materials.

The agreement follows South Korea's broader strategy of building partnerships with resource-rich nations in Latin America. By diversifying its sources of critical minerals, Seoul aims to reinforce the competitiveness of its battery, semiconductor, and electric vehicle industries while reducing dependence on a limited number of suppliers.

During high-level meetings between officials from both countries, discussions also covered opportunities to expand trade, investment, and cooperation in energy and industrial development. The partnership is expected to encourage new joint projects that support technological innovation and sustainable resource development.

In parallel with the agreement, South Korean investments in Argentina's mining sector continue to grow, including projects designed to increase lithium production capacity. These investments are expected to boost exports, create employment opportunities, and strengthen Argentina's position as a major supplier of critical minerals to global markets.

As demand for lithium and other strategic resources continues to rise, international cooperation is becoming increasingly important for ensuring stable supply chains and supporting the rapid expansion of clean energy technologies worldwide.
