Macron urges diplomacy on Iran and criticizes US strategy at EU summit
French President Emmanuel Macron called for a diplomatic approach to Iran and rejected Washington’s strategy during a European Union summit, warning that escalating tensions risk destabilizing global markets. Speaking at the gathering in Agia Napa, he said negotiations with Tehran must rely on sustained dialogue rather than military pressure or economic coercion.
Macron argued that restoring stability in the Middle East is essential for global economic confidence, particularly as disruptions linked to the conflict affect energy markets. He stressed that engagement with Iran should follow a consistent diplomatic framework, signaling a clear divergence from the United States’ current posture alongside Israel in the region.
The two day summit, chaired by Antonio Costa, brought together leaders from the European Union and several Middle Eastern countries, including Egypt, Lebanon, Syria, Jordan and members of the Gulf Cooperation Council. Discussions covered support for Ukraine, including a €90 billion loan package, before shifting to the Middle East crisis and rising energy costs linked to disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, through which roughly one fifth of global oil and gas flows.
During the summit, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez called for sanctions against Israel, arguing that the EU’s stance risks undermining its credibility. He said the bloc applies inconsistent standards between Ukraine and the Middle East, weakening its position on international law and conflict resolution.
Macron also emphasized the need to maintain ceasefires in Iran and Lebanon and confirmed coordination with United Kingdom on a maritime initiative aimed at restoring navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. The effort follows a Paris meeting hosted with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, where dozens of countries discussed a defensive multinational mission to secure shipping routes once conditions allow.
The initiative notably excludes the United States, reflecting a widening transatlantic divide over how to handle Iran. Macron’s remarks reinforce Europe’s preference for de escalation through diplomacy, even as geopolitical tensions continue to intensify.
