Low voter turnout marks legislative elections in Ivory Coast

Legislative elections held on Saturday in Ivory Coast were characterized by a low voter turnout, according to preliminary figures released by the Independent Electoral Commission (CEI).

The provisional data indicate that just over 32% of registered voters participated in the poll, a figure lower than that recorded in previous legislative elections. The vote took place in a tense political environment, as it was boycotted by the party of former president Laurent Gbagbo, which called on its supporters to stay away from the ballot boxes.

More than eight million citizens were eligible to vote, only two months after a presidential election that confirmed President Alassane Ouattara in power for a fourth term. That earlier vote was also contested by parts of the opposition, citing the exclusion of several key political figures.

Election officials acknowledged the occurrence of minor disturbances in certain areas but stated that the incidents were quickly contained by security forces and did not disrupt the overall electoral process. Authorities had deployed tens of thousands of security personnel nationwide to ensure the smooth conduct of the vote.

The low participation rate has reignited debate about political engagement and public confidence in electoral institutions. Analysts note that repeated boycotts and limited competition may contribute to voter disengagement in the long term.
