Littoral governor condemns unrest after four protesters killed in Douala

The governor of Cameroon’s Littoral region has confirmed the deaths of four demonstrators during violent clashes in Douala following post-election protests. In an official statement released late on Sunday, October 26, Governor Samuel Dieudonné Ivaha Diboua attributed responsibility to presidential candidate Issa Tchiroma Bakary, who allegedly called on supporters to demonstrate in defiance of electoral authorities.

Deadly violence in Douala

According to the governor’s statement, the incidents erupted when several groups of young people, described as being under the influence of narcotics and acting with criminal intent, attempted to storm the Nkoulouloun gendarmerie brigade and two police stations in Douala’s second and fifth districts. Security forces intervened to contain the situation, leading to an armed confrontation that left four protesters dead and several officers injured.

Governor Ivaha Diboua expressed deep regret over the loss of life and extended condolences to the victims’ families. He strongly condemned what he described as premeditated acts of violence threatening public order and national security. Authorities have launched investigations to determine the full circumstances of the clashes and hold those responsible accountable under Cameroonian law.

Warning ahead of official election results

As the Constitutional Council prepares to announce the official results of the presidential election on Monday, October 27, the governor issued a stern warning to anyone planning further unrest in the Littoral region. He assured that all necessary measures have been taken to preserve peace and prevent additional disturbances.

“The governor firmly warns all those who might attempt to provoke new incidents,” his statement read. “The authorities are determined to uphold public order and ensure that peace and legality prevail. Citizens of good faith are urged to resume their daily activities calmly, for the law shall prevail.”

The call for restraint comes amid mounting political tension as the country awaits official confirmation of the electoral outcome. Local observers report an increased security presence across key neighborhoods of Douala, reflecting the government’s determination to restore calm and stability in the nation’s economic capital.
