Jordan Church Shooting Leaves Seven Dead as Authorities Hunt Gunmen
At least seven people were killed when gunmen opened fire during a funeral at a church in southern Jordan on Friday, October 23, prompting a security operation to track down those responsible. The attack took place at Hamoud Church in Karak Governorate, where mourners had gathered to pay their respects to a deceased member of the community.
Jordanian authorities launched an investigation following the shooting, which also left dozens of people injured according to subsequent reports. The incident has raised concerns over public safety in a country where attacks of this kind are relatively uncommon.
Gunmen Open Fire During Funeral Gathering
Witness accounts reported by Jordanian state television indicate that the attackers arrived in a vehicle and fired repeatedly at people gathered near the church. The gunfire reportedly continued for several minutes before the assailants fled.
Security forces were deployed to the area and began searching for the suspects. Authorities have not publicly established the attackers’ identities or confirmed a motive for the violence.
Initial reports gave differing figures for the number of injured people. Reuters subsequently reported seven deaths and 34 injuries, citing Jordanian security officials. Investigators were continuing their work as emergency services treated the wounded.
Authorities Launch Investigation
Jordan’s security services are working to establish the circumstances surrounding the attack and identify those responsible. Officials have described the perpetrators as unknown assailants, while the investigation remains ongoing.
Jordanian Interior Minister Mazin Al Farrayeh said it was too early to determine whether the attackers had links to any known extremist organisation, either inside or outside the country. No group had claimed responsibility at the time of reporting.
King Abdullah II condemned the attack and pledged a firm response against those responsible. His remarks also stressed national unity, rejecting any attempt to create divisions within Jordanian society.
Attack Shakes Community in Southern Jordan
Karak, located approximately 180 kilometres south of Amman, is home to a longstanding Christian community within Jordan’s predominantly Muslim population. The shooting occurred during a moment of mourning, making the attack particularly distressing for families and community members gathered at the church.
Christian communities have played an important role in Jordan’s religious and cultural heritage. The country also hosts several sites associated with Christian history and pilgrimage.
The attack has therefore drawn attention not only to the immediate security investigation but also to the protection of religious gatherings and places of worship.
Regional Reactions and Security Concerns
The shooting prompted condemnation from regional officials and international representatives. Lebanon’s President Joseph Aoun and Syria’s Foreign Ministry expressed their rejection of the violence, while Iraq voiced solidarity with Jordan.
Although Jordan has generally maintained relative stability, authorities have previously announced operations to prevent attacks linked to armed extremist groups. The latest incident is likely to intensify scrutiny of security arrangements around public gatherings, particularly large religious and community events.
For now, investigators face the task of determining who carried out the shooting, what motivated it and whether the perpetrators had any organisational connections. Until those questions are answered, the precise circumstances behind the attack remain uncertain.
