Nine Moulay Ismail University Researchers Recognised in Stanford–Elsevier 2026 Ranking
Nine researchers affiliated with Moulay Ismail University (UMI) in Morocco have been included in the 2026 edition of the Stanford–Elsevier ranking, which identifies scientists whose research has achieved significant international impact. The recognition highlights the university’s contribution to scientific knowledge and the growing visibility of Moroccan researchers in the global academic community.
The selection draws on bibliometric indicators from the Scopus database, including measures used to assess the reach and influence of researchers’ publications within their respective scientific fields.
An International Benchmark for Scientific Research
The Stanford–Elsevier database is widely known for identifying researchers among the top 2% worldwide according to selected measures of scientific impact. It evaluates research output through indicators such as citations and other bibliometric measures designed to assess the influence of published work.
The distinction awarded to the nine UMI researchers reflects the international visibility of their scientific contributions. However, the ranking should be understood as an assessment based on bibliometric indicators rather than a comprehensive evaluation of every aspect of research quality.
For Moroccan universities, representation in international scientific databases can help strengthen institutional visibility, encourage academic collaboration and demonstrate the contribution of local research teams to developments in their respective disciplines.
A Research Strategy Built Over Two Decades
Moulay Ismail University has been working to organise and strengthen its research activities since 2005. The initiative has involved developing structures to coordinate scientific work across its various institutions and improve the visibility of research teams.
The university subsequently introduced a formal framework for organising research in July 2014, followed by a revised regulatory structure in 2019. This approach sought to bring together researchers with complementary expertise, encourage cooperation between laboratories and establish stronger research networks around priority themes.
The objective is to create conditions in which teams can pool their resources, develop joint projects and increase the international reach of their scientific output.
Four Major Fields of Research
The university’s accredited research structures cover four broad areas: science and technology; humanities and literature; law, economics and management; and education sciences.
This multidisciplinary organisation allows the institution to support a wide range of academic activities while encouraging cooperation between different fields of knowledge.
UMI has also established a periodic evaluation process for its accredited research structures. The assessment examines scientific output, research achievements and proposed projects, helping the university identify areas of strength and opportunities for improvement.
Encouraging publications in recognised international journals and strengthening research standards form part of this wider effort.
Strengthening Morocco’s Presence in Global Academia
The inclusion of nine researchers in the 2026 Stanford–Elsevier ranking provides Moulay Ismail University with additional international visibility. It also reflects the importance of sustained investment in research organisation, academic cooperation and the dissemination of scientific findings.
For Morocco’s higher education sector, such recognition forms part of a broader effort to reinforce scientific capacity and expand participation in international research networks.
The long-term impact of these initiatives will depend not only on bibliometric recognition but also on the ability of universities to develop new knowledge, support emerging researchers and translate scientific advances into educational, technological and socioeconomic benefits.
The latest distinction therefore represents both recognition of individual researchers and an opportunity for Moulay Ismail University to continue developing its research environment and international academic partnerships.
